As from the smallest of the acorns a mighty oak may grow,
With that same hope the seeds of friendship we may choose to sow.
Some may cast these seeds widely regardless of the ground,
Where they will on both fertile and rocky soil be found.
These friendships are as common as the fish caught in a net,
And if we should part, these friends we may soon forget.
Others only plant a few with the care of a surgeon and his blade,
It’s from these seeds that the strongest friendship bonds are made.
We nurture these young friendships in hopes they will last for years,
They are watered with joy, with laughter and even painful tears.
O’er the passing months and years our lives become entwined,
And even should we have to part, part of us we will leave behind.
In that time the roots run deep and the trunk grows solid and sound,
These friendships will still survive though we two are not around.
The miles grow between us, sometimes by many states,
The weekend calls last forever, never caring about the rates.
Then one day it happens; the phone call goes unmade,
The sound of their voice in memories slowly start to fade.
Days turn to weeks, into months, and then to years,
All without the friend with whom we’ve shed so many tears.
The friendship still does live though, we each carry of the other a part,
For that little seed of friendship grew within us and became our heart.
